Introduction To 1/32 Slot Car Racing

The current 1/32 slot car racing is a small, fast, and exhilarating variant of scale-model racing. 1/32 is a very popular scale for models and miniatures. In this scale, one unit of length on the miniature car is equivalent to 32 units of length on the full-sized car. The scale of 1/32 slot car racing is also written as 1:32, one thirty-second, or 3/8 inch scale. The latter name is given because 3/8 inch on the 1/32 slot car racing vehicle represents a foot on a full-sized car. 1/32 is also a popular scale for other miniatures such as toy trains and model soldiers.

The sport of 1/32 slot car racing is especially popular in the European racing arena. The model car manufacturer Scalextric produces vehicles for 1/32 slot car racing. The name Scalextric has become synonymous with slot cars in general, and the 1/32 slot car racing hobby specifically. When compared to a full sized 12 foot long car, a 1/32 slot car racing vehicle measures 4.5 inches in length. A 6 foot tall driver of this miniature car would be 2.25 inches tall. If there was an imaginary driver that small, there would be a 2.25 inch tall driver in a 4.5 inch long car! However, model drivers are not used in 1/32 slot car racing because they add extra weight and slow the car unnecessarily.

The track in 1/32 slot car racing must also be of 1/32 scale. There are several reasons for this. If cars of differing scales are used on a 1/32 slot car racing track, the cars would be of different sizes. The larger cars would not only have larger electric motors, but they would crowd the 1/32 slot car racing track and prevent passing. Furthermore, smaller scale cars used on 1/32 slot car racing track might not have bottom pins long enough to get power from the electrified slot. All components of a 1/32 slot car racing kit must be of the same scale. Any upgrades or add-ons need to be of 1:32 scale too.

Competitions for 1/32 slot car racing are held on special tracks. The tracks in standard kits are comprised of many plastic pieces which must be snapped together to create a continuous track. The track joints make the 1/32 slot car racing track bumpy and noisy. Competition tracks for 1/32 slot car racing are often created from a large sheet of industrially level metal or wood. The slots are carefully routed out from the smooth and level surface. Electrical contacts are laid inside the slots to power the cars. With these tracks, 1/32 slot car racing is a smooth and very speedy experience.

There are many cars, tracks, and accessories available for 1/32 slot car racing. If you can find a local hobby group, you can get great tips for buying and running your own 1/32 slot car racing track.
