Having Loads Of Fun With Slot Car Racing

Slot car racing is an innovative game or hobby for those who are fascinated with racing cars. Miniature or scale-model cars are raced on a special track. The track is flat and wide enough for two or more slot cars to race side by side. A thin, deep groove is built into the track for each car. These continuous slots run the entire length of the track. The slot car has a small blade or pin that extends beneath the car into the slot. This blade keeps the car on the track and supplies power to the car during slot car racing.

Slot car racing vehicles are usually miniatures or scale models of existing cars. These cars often have the same aerodynamic shapes and features of full size racing cars. A small electric motor inside the slot car propels the small vehicle during slot car racing. These rear wheel drive cars pick up electric power from the blade which rests within the electrically charged track slot. The track slots are electrified using a transformer as described below.

A source of electricity is required to participate in slot car racing. There is no room inside these small cars for batteries. A transformer power pack is plugged into full strength house alternating current (AC). The transformer converts the AC current into direct current (DC) at a much lower voltage. This voltage enables the cars to run during slot car racing. The voltage and current used during slot car racing are safe and pose no threat to the racers.

Hand held controllers are the funnest part of slot car racing. These pistol shaped controllers have a trigger control. Pulling the trigger gives more power to the car to which the controller is attached. The controllers are variable speed, enabling participants in slot car racing to accelerate and decelerate their cars as needed. Inexperienced drivers tend to give their cars full power during slot car racing. However, they quickly learn that slot cars at full speed are likely to fly off the track at top speeds.

Enthusiasts of slot car racing can simply race for fun. They can participate in slot car racing competitions, or even recreate famous races in history. Just as in normal car racing, slot car racing requires a high degree of skill to keep cars on the curves. The racers must also know when to accelerate down the straightaways and brake when entering curves. Slot car racing is a fun and exciting hobby which can be enjoyed by persons of almost any age.
